Meet the Pro's at the Island Grill fundraising success for CFY

On Monday, December 6th,Clearwater Gas System presented Meet the Pro's at the Island Way Grill to benefit Clearwater For Youth. The event was hosted by restaurant owner Frank Chivas. Over two-hundred guests and sports celebrities shared great food and drink. For the tenth year in a row the proceeds benefitted Clearwater For Youth in helping to provide needed scholarships and grants to local youth sports programs and participants, insuring "no child is turned away" due to financial concerns.

Local sports players and coaches mingled with and signed autographs for the guests in attendance. Dave Moore (Bucs) helped host the event and Tampa Bay Ray coaches, Don Zimmer, Dave Martinez, Tim Foley, Jim Hickey and Derek Shelton were all in attendance. Former Buc players Parnell Dickinson and Mark Robinson were among the sports stars along with local major league baseball products, Ryan Webb (Marlins/CCC), Casey Kotchman (Mariners/Seminole), Boof Bonser (Mets/Gibbs) Jimy Williams (former manager of the Red Sox and Blue Jays), nineteen year veteran umpire, Jerry Crawford and longtime sportscaster, Dick Crippen. Even Clearwater Threshers mascot, Phinley made an appearance.

Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard welcomed the guests including City Manager, Bill Horne, Police Chief, Tony Holloway and the entire City of Clearwater Council members. Former Mayor Brian Aungst acted as master of ceremonies. The evening concluded with a raffle of Bay Star restaurant gift certificates and autographed sports memorabilia.

Police Chief Tony Holloway joins CFY Board of Trustees

Clearwater Police Chief Tony Holloway was elected to the Clearwater For Youth Board of Trustees at the June 30th board meeting. Chief Holloway took over the Police Chief position this January. CFY welcomes Chief Holloway to the board and looks forward to his input and passion toward helping the youth of our community. Clearwater For Youth has been supporting youth sports programs in the community since 1972 and had originally begun in 1966 as a football and cheerleading program sponsored by the Police Athletic League. The Suncoast Kiwanis picked up the ball in 1967 and finally CFY was founded in 1972 to help youth reach their fullest potential through enriching and productive sports programs and activities.

CAPOGNA GOLF CLASSIC to benefit CFY

The 28th Annual Capogna Dugout Golf Classic Scramble to benefit The Art Capogna Memorial Scholarship and Clearwater For Youth is scheduled for Sunday, October 17, 2010 at the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club in Clearwater. The $5,000.00 Art Capogna Scholarship is presented each year to a deserving graduating high school senior at the Clearwater For Youth Celebrity banquet. A foursome plus hole sponsorship is $500.00. Awards, prizes, raffle and goodie bag with golf shirt, along with Capogna's famous sausage sandwiches and drinks are all included. CFY Board Elects John Timberlake as Chairman

Clearwater For Youth elected a new Executive Board at it's April 14th Board of Trustees meeting. The board which will serve for the new fiscal year of June 1, 2010 - May 31, 2011 includes: Chairman - John Timberlake (Phillies Director of Florida Operations), Vice Chairman - Kevin Dunbar (City of Clearwater Parks & Recreation Director) and Secretary/Treasurer - Craig Gilman (Lewis, Birch & Ricardo, CPA's). The board thanked outgoing Chairman, Brian Aungst (Bright House Networks and former City of Clearwater Mayor) for his outstanding leadership in leading a successful endowment campaign and leaving a healthy organiztion moving forward to carry out it's mission of providing sport grants and scholarships.for the youth of our community.

The Philadelphia Phillies presented Clearwater For Youth with a $7,000.00 donation prior to the game vs. Toronto yesterday. The donation is from the proceeds of Phillies PhanFest which was held earlier during Spring Training at Bright House Field. About the Kids Golf Classic at Old Memorial

Clearwater For Youth and Academy Prep Center of Tampa have once again partnered with Dex Imaging to hold our annual golf event at Old Memorial in Tampa on May 17th. All proceeds go to benefit both organizations. Teams sponsorships are available at $3,000.00 and sponsorships range from $1,000.00 to $50,000.00. The Clearwater Current: Banquet turns out to be a hit for the kids

Clearwater for Youth raised over $50,000 through silent and live auction items donated by local businesses, as well as sponsorships, tickets sales and donations. The banquet was attended by over 250 community leaders and sports celebrities, including Mayor Hibbard, Jamie Moyer, Angelo Dundee and David Montgomery.

CFY raised funds totaling 1.2 million dollars in 2009. The largest donations were by Richard O. “Dick” Jacobson, who gifted a $700,000 endowment at CFY’s last celebrity banquet, and Warren and Nancy Hughes, who gifted another $150,000.00. The needed donations help CFY continue to annually provide hundreds of scholarships, travel grants and equipment funding to boys and girls in football, cheerleading, track & field, basketball, swimming, baseball, softball and soccer in the Clearwater region.

At this year’s banquet, Jamie Moyer and Angelo Dundee were awarded the Frederick E. Fisher Humanitarian Award and the J. Warren Hughes Champion for Youth Award respectively.
